What kind of president will Armenians have?

May 12, 2007 | 20:15

At 11:00 o’clock president Kocharyan, the first lady and the president’s daughter voted in Polling Station #9/11. “I am voting for the future of Armenia, for the social and economic reformation”, told the president to journalists and said he hoped everything would go normally.

The president didn’t say whom he voted for. “One thing that I want is to see representatives of the real opposition, but not foreigners represented in factions. I don’t want to make any predictions; several hours have remained”, added president Kocharyan. In response to a question as to whether the political powers of Armenia were mostly getting prepared for the presidencial or parliamentary elections the president said that the law provides that the citizens have equal rights to run for president. The president thinks that the parties that will get the most votes will heve privileged starting positions.

“I don’t think the outcome of these elections will be decisive for the presidential elections. Based on the new Constitution we may assume that the president, who will have real tools in parliament, will be a real leader. From this point it is very important whether the president is supported by the majority or not. If yes, the president will be strong. If not, the president will be like a nominal leader”, said Kocharyan.
