Why do Armenians watch ALM?

Armen KOCHARYAN | November 18, 2004

Even the most highly acclaimed know-it-all of the "What? Where? Why?" television game show can not answer this question. I am not trying to give an answer either. I am just trying to grasp the concept of one thing: how could the highest number of people who were university graduates 10-15 years ago now be watching ALM?

If an 18 year-old girl who really has nothing to show and her facial expression makes it clear that she has wasted 10 years of her life in school goes up on stage, then what else do you want from the poor children that "sing"? If one can open a television network to advertise a laundry detergent, why can't someone start a television network for advertising children, especially when it is working with the "Energizer" batteries. If you can start a television network in order to work some money in America, then why can't a television network be started to spend all of Russia's money? If a television network can be founded just so it can be considered a network, then why not start one?

If anyone can start a television network for the sole purpose of doing bad humor and putting aside the beloved humor of Gyumri, why can’t one open up a television network to do away with humor in its entirety? Finally, why can Artashes Geghamyan, who has starred in the film “Tzhvzhik”, steal the heart of a proletariat, while he (Tigran Karapetyan), the “famous anchor”, defender of all non-professional geniuses, owner of his ring and his TV holding can’t attract the attention of Geghamyan’s proletariat?

1.    Have the members of the National Board of Radio/Television programs ever watched the (excuse me for saying this word) programs aired on ALM TV?
2.    Why are our political figures (be the authorities or the opposition, deputies or not, right or left) participating in this mascarade?
3.    Do the authorities know that a country’s collapse begins with the degradation of children?
4.Where are the Armenians who liked watching “22:30”, the programs prepared by R. Mavisakalyan, the “Travelers’ Club”, the people who liked watching Aznavour and “Bitlis”, or listening to Babajanyan’s and Orbelyan’s music?

Why aren’t contemporary composers and artists defending their copyrights and allow others to treat them like that? Aftet the state registration of the “Jehovah’s Witnesses” sect, an army of journalists, along with political figures, started to accuse the Ministry of Justice and the authorities. But ladies and gentlemen, something similar to that happened a long time ago when the “Tigran’s Witnesses” sect got registered. The fanatics of ALM, the members of the Popular political party and I assure you that is worse because in contrast to “Tigran’s Witnesses”, “Jehovah’s Witnesses” have no mass media. It is much easier to preach that way and that is exactly what centripetal politician Tigran Karapetyan has been doing for the past 2 years. However, as far as I know, a politician is not the one who is centripetal, but rather, it is speed (from an 8th grade physics book). As a reference, I would like to add that the centripetal force makes a big impact on the centripetal speed and the bigger the centripetality (which the “most highly rated politician” and “highest ranking TV anchor” proudly says), the bigger the centripetal force. I am certain that there will be a wave of disappointement after this article against the newspaper and the author of the article. But, as they say, it is difficult in the beginning. I have faith that there will come a time when we will once again be convinced that we must learn from our mistakes.

Optimistic for the future of Armenian TV programs,
A.K.
